In 1978 Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi sat together at Chateau Mouton Rothschild. In less than two hours the two gentlemen had created the dream of Opus One: a single red wine of absolute quality that would reflect the personality and character of both partners. The two men imagined a seamless blend of their winemaking and cultures.
The first of its kind, the joint venture began in Napa Valley with its first vintage in 1979. Released with great fanfare in 1984, Opus One has since grown to worldwide recognition. The iconic winery, which evokes the elegrance and balance of the partnership, was completed in 1991.
While always following a singular vision, the wines of Opus One have been fashioned over the years by different winemakers from Chateau Mouton and Robert Mondavi. Beginning with the 2001 vintage, Opus One wines have been made by one winemaker, Michael Silacci. This tasting will take a look at the evolution of grape growing and winemaking philosophy and techniques at Opus One.
Wines to be tasted:
Opus One 2012
Opus One 2010
Opus One 2009
Opus One 2007
Opus One 2006
Opus One 2005
Opus One 2001
Opus One 2000

Celebrating Five Decades of Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
Fifty years ago, Robert Mondavi realized a long-held dream—to create excellent Napa Valley wines that would stand in the company of the great wines of the world. He founded the iconic Robert Mondavi Winery in 1966, opening the door to the future of American fine wine.
Robert knew that the first place to begin was in the vineyard. For the home of his fledgling winery, he chose a 12-acre site in the To Kalon Vineyard, a historic property long regarded as one of Napa Valley’s finest. Today, Robert Mondavi Winery owns more than 450 acres of the esteemed, ‘first-growth’ vineyard and it continues to be the inspiration and driving force of the winery’s Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve.
Debuting in 1971, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve has been awarded critical acclaim and achievement for five consecutive decades. Today, Director of Winemaking, Genevieve Janssens, and her dedicated team tirelessly follow Robert Mondavi’s vision and quest for perfection.
In celebration of Robert Mondavi Winery’s 50th Anniversary, Joe Harden, Winemaker, and Master of Wine, Peter Marks, will open up the winery’s library and share five decades of Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, featuring vintages from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s.
Wines Presented:
1976 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Oakville, Napa Valley
1988 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Oakville, Napa Valley
1994 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Oakville, Napa Valley
2001 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Oakville, Napa Valley
2012 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, To Kalon Vineyard, Oakville, Napa Valley
2013 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, To Kalon Vineyard, Oakville, Napa Valley *Special Preview, official release August 2016*

In 1966, Heitz Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was introduced as the first vineyard-designated wine in the Napa Valley. Known for its rich layers of complexity and an identifiable minty aroma, this wine has captured worldwide attention during the past 50 years for its consistent quality and age-ability. Accolades include being selected by Wine Spectator as one of the Top 12 Wines of the 20th Century. During another historic tasting in 2012 that included top wines from around the world, FINE Magazine’s international panel designated Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet the Best Wine of the 20th Century.
The fruit for this wine is grown in the prestigious Oakville appellation. Tucked out of sight at the base of the Mayacamas foothills, the legendary Martha’s Vineyard rolls gently across a gravelly plain. The vines are meticulously positioned to soak up the morning sun before cooling down a bit earlier than the valley floor. This ranch is home to a proprietary Cabernet clone that is noted for the deep purple hue of its small berries and the splendid concentration of its flavor. Tom and Martha May have owned this Oakville vineyard since 1963. Early to recognize the power of terroir, they were determined to get their fruit into the right hands. In an historic deal, the Heitz family agreed to purchase the grapes from the May family’s first harvest, and one year later Joe Heitz produced an exquisite wine from the fruit. The two families agreed that this Cabernet deserved a vineyard-designation on the label. That was the beginning of an exclusive relationship that continues today with second generation Laura May Everett and Richard May.
Join Kathleen Heitz Myers for this rare tasting through the decades of Martha’s Vineyard, featuring these specially selected vintages:
Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1978
Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1981
Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1987
Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1991
Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 1997

An Exploration of the Antinori Family’s Guado al Tasso Estate with Allegra Antinori
Allegra Antinori, the 26th Generation of the renowned Antinori winemaking family of Tuscany, will lead you on a tasting journey of the wines from the family’s Guado al Tasso Estate. This spectacular 2,470 acre estate is located about 60 miles southwest of Florence on the Tuscan coast. The warm days with cooling sea breezes in the vineyards allow Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Vermentino to thrive. The Guado al Tasso estate is very special to the Antinori family and they craft their flagship Guado al Tasso Bolgheri Superiore DOC wine from this estate.
The Antinori Family history is a narrative about devotion to winemaking that is woven through 630 years and 26 generations. The family’s winemaking heritage began in 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became part of the “Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri” or “Vintner’s Guild.” For six centuries the family has personally managed the business and today it remains entirely family owned. The Antinori reputation has grown throughout the centuries by making innovative and sometimes courageous choices, always with unwavering respect for the land and for tradition. This commitment to the qualities of tradition, passion and innovation has made Antinori one of the leading Italian producers of fine wines.
Allegra Antinori will present the following estate wines from Tenuta Guado al Tasso:
2014 Vermentino Bolgheri DOC
2014 Scalabrone Bolgheri DOC Rosato
2013 Cont’Ugo Bolgheri DOC
2013 Il Bruciato Bolgheri DOC
2012 Guado al Tasso Bolgheri Superiore DOC

The Festival is pleased to pay tribute to chef, restaurateur and author Jonathan Waxman, and present the Southern Wine & Spirits Lifetime Achievement Award to Constellation Brands’ Chairman of the Board Richard Sands and President and CEO Rob Sands. Our 15th anniversary Tribute Dinner will take place at the Festival’s host hotel Loews Miami Beach, as it has since SOBEWFF’s inception in 2002. Master of Ceremonies Tom Colicchio will oversee the evening as guests honor the contributions of this extraordinary group of gentlemen. The swanky and cool jazz band Potash Twins -- hand selected by Jonathan Waxman himself -- will be the live entertainment for this evening's impeccable dinner.
An acclaimed league of chefs will prepare the evening’s cuisine to pay tribute to our honorees, including:
- Frederic Delaire, Loews Miami Beach
- Bobby Flay
- Tyler Florence
- Marc Forgione
- Aarón Sánchez
- Marcus Samuelsson
- Nancy Silverton
Long before Waxman was making diner’s taste buds sing, he studied political science and honed his trombone-playing skills while at the University of California Berkeley. While selling Ferraris in Berkeley, Waxman’s employer introduced him to Tante Marie’s Cooking School in San Francisco, where he studied French cuisine with Mary Risley. This led to his enrollment in the La Varenne School in Paris, where he mastered classic French cooking technique and received the Grand Diplôme. Today Waxman is chef and owner of Barbuto in Manhattan's West Village, Adele’s in Nashville, and Montecito in Toronto’s entertainment district with director Ivan Reitman. He recently opened Bajo Sexto, a taqueria in Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. In 2015 Jonathan will launch a reinvention of his classic Jams in 1 Hotels Central Park, a new brand from Starwood Capital Group. His first cookbook, A Great American Cook, was published in 2007 and Italian, My Way was released in April 2011. He participated in two seasons of Top Chef Masters on Bravo, where he was dubbed the 'Obi Wan Kenobi' of celebrity chefs.
Richard Sands serves as the Chairman of the Board, and Rob Sands as the President and CEO, of Constellation Brands; the largest multi-category supplier of beverage alcohol to distributors and retailers and importer of the Modelo family of brands in the U.S. Richard led the acquisition of numerous wine companies during the 1990s and 2000s including Robert Mondavi, Simi, Clos du Bois and Franciscan Estates. He also led the procurement of key spirits brands SVEDKA Vodka, Paul Masson Grande Amber Brandy and Black Velvet Canadian Whisky. In 2013, under Rob’s leadership, Constellation acquired the remaining portion of the Crown Imports beer joint venture along with a state-of-the-art brewery in Mexico and perpetual rights to produce the Grupo Modelo brands in the U.S. Together they have led the company’s gross sales to reach close to $6 billion, solidifying their position as the leading multi-category supplier of beverage alcohol to distributors and retailers in North America.

From Château Clerc Milon to Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Clerc Milon/Grand Cru Classé en 1855
A Grand Cru Classé of the 1855 classification, Château Clerc Milon has 41 hectares (101 acres) of vines overlooking the Gironde estuary in the commune of Pauillac.
With a superb terroir, thanks to the composition of the soil and exposure to sunlight, the vineyard is a close neighbour of two First Growths. Most of the vines are over 50 years old and represent a genetic treasure-house, including plantings of the historic but rare Carmenère grape.
Baron Philippe de Rothschild purchased Château Clerc Milon in 1970. Thanks to the energy of his daughter, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, and a devoted winemaking team, the estate gradually experienced a renaissance. The vineyard was entirely restructured and many technical improvements were introduced, culminating in the construction in 2007 of a new vat room and cutting-edge winemaking facilities. The various changes have borne fruit, and Château Clerc Milon has become a new benchmark for the Médoc.
Today, Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild are continuing the work of their mother, Baroness Philippine.
Château Mouton Rothschild/Premier Grand Cru Classé
Château Mouton Rothschild, a Premier Cru Classé since 1973, now belongs to Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, the three children of Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and grandchildren of the legendary Baron Philippe.
The estate comprises 83 hectares (205 acres) of vines in Pauillac, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (81%), Merlot (15%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (1%), and boasts an exceptional terroir, both for the quality of its soil and its exposure to sunlight.
Combining respect for tradition with the latest technology, meticulous care and attention are given from grape to bottle: hand picking, manual and optical sorting, fermentation vats with transparent staves, maturing in new oak barrels.

Latin Legend, Chef and TV personality Lorena Garcia comes to the Biltmore, Coral Gables as she rounds up some of her fellow colleagues to take pig roasting to a whole new level.
This year, this superior group of professional pig roasters will use their secret arsenal of special spice blends to make your taste buds dance with their treatment of all-natural, farm-raised, exceptionally tender pork, to delight swine lovers with creative pig-centric tapas, served inside the Biltmore Hotel Main Ballroom while outdoors in the expansive beautiful terraces, slow roasting whole pigs will render mouth-watering meat being served straight from each chef's own caja china.
In addition, Goya Foods will delight with their own tapas, whole roasted pig creations and a large variety of amazingly delicious side dishes while the Biltmore Hotel, accompanied by pastry chefs and ice cream makers, will be featured in their own “Sweet Zone.” Each chef will compete for the coveted Goya People’s Choice Award and National Pork Board's Critics Choice Award, with the winners being announced at the end of the night.
All these amazing savory samplings will be accompanied by special libations from the Southern Wine & Spirits of Florida portfolio and up-beat tunes and live entertainment by Grammy Award-Winning Marlow Rosado & The Tucan band presented by El Tucán Cabaret, to cap off this celebration of swine!

We’ve called on our friends over at the Miami International Film Festival (MIFF) once again to bring you a gourmet fusion of food and film at #SOBEWFF! Join us on the Americana Lawn at the Festival’s host hotel Loews Miami Beach for a screening of the 1992 Mexican classic film Like Water for Chocolate (Como agua para chocolate), followed by a discussion with screenwriter Laura Esquivel - who also happens to be the author of the original novel from which the film was based!
Nearly 25 years after its initial release, the film is still heralded for its lush magic realism and deeply sensory approach to the intertwinement of love, life and FOOD – specifically, classic Mexican dishes with “a lot of quail, garlic, honey, chiles, mole, cilantro, rose petals, and corn meal”, as the late critic Roger Ebert recalls. The film swept the Mexican Academy Awards in 1993, winning 11 awards including Best Picture. For several years, it was the highest-grossing Spanish language film in U.S. box office history.
Presented in partnership with Miami Dade College’s MIFF, Esquivel will participate in a conversation about the impact and continued legacy of the film, moderated by the film festival’s director Jaie Laplante following the screening. This film is not recommended for those under the age of 17.
The film screening and conversation are open to the public, but seating is limited and first-come, first-served. In order to manage event capacity, we ask that you please use the “RESERVE” button on this page to sign up and receive your complimentary print-at-home ticket to this event. Once you click the “RESERVE” button, follow the link to select your ticket(s) at no cost and be sure to bring the ticket(s) with you for admittance to the screening.

Happy Birthday to us! Close out the Festival by boogieing down and noshing on late-night Asian bites from a collection of chefs helping us celebrate. And who better to host this party but our good friend and James Beard Award-winning TV personality, chef, food writer and teacher, who is widely regarded as one of the most versatile, knowledgeable and “bizarre” personalities in the food world, Andrew Zimmern. Dance the night away, fill your belly with sushi, dumplings, dim sum and a variety of other unique eats, sip on special libations from Gekkeikan Sake, Tito's Handemade Vodka and Ron Viejo de Caldas Rum, and don't miss the opportunity to celebrate in sunny South Beach and help us close out the 15th annual SOBEWFF! Come one, come all!
This event will be sold exclusively on Groupon. Tickets go on sale January 5, 2016.
